Spreading Joy and Community: Utica Gem Danielle McEwen

Every school community has individuals who bring both exceptional dedication and unyielding joy to the halls each day, and at Columbus Elementary, Danielle McEwen is undeniably one of those people. A proud Utica native who grew up attending Utica Schools and graduating from Proctor High School, Mrs. McEwen brings deep roots, integrity and more than 20 years of dedicated service back to her hometown district.

In the classroom, Mrs. McEwen is known for her ability to quickly forge strong, meaningful connections with her students. She transforms learning into an exciting experience by creating memorable songs and dance moves that make her classroom dynamic and fun. Colleagues describe her as one of the most dedicated educators they know -- someone who balances a demanding professional career and a rich family life while maintaining an extraordinary work ethic.

Beyond her classroom doors, Mrs. McEwen serves as a vital anchor for the Columbus school culture. Acting as a central pillar of the PTO, she takes on key leadership roles in organizing cherished school-wide traditions, including the annual Carnival and the Veterans Day Ceremony. She makes it her personal mission to know everyone in the building and learn a little something about each person, ensuring that students, staff and families alike feel recognized and valued.

Whether she is snapping photos around the building to make people smile or offering grounded, trustworthy advice to a peer, Mrs. McEwen spreads positive energy wherever she goes. During stressful moments, her contagious sense of humor shines through -- whether she is sharing a much-needed hug, doing a silly dance, or making her famous funny faces to bring laughter to her colleagues.

Mrs. McEwen exemplifies the heart, spirit and unity of the District. Columbus Elementary and the Utica City School District are deeply grateful to have a shining example like Mrs. McEwen guiding our community as a true Utica Gem.
